- The Place de la Comedie (Architecture of the nineteenth century) 34000 Montpellier ( Hérault ).
The Revolution of 1789 hardly affected the administrative life of the city. Only the textile industries suffer, but the trade remains prosperous and the public facilities continue disappearance of the ramparts, opening of new streets, creation of the museum Fabre ...
The development of viticulture favors, in addition, the constitution of fortunes. We are witnessing a real urban metamorphosis with the construction of the Palais de Justice, the Sainte-Anne and Saint-Roch churches and the theater ...
The arrival of the railway in 1839, between the city of Sète and Montpellier then towards Nîmes, will move the nerve center of the city.
The opening of the city center
The station is built. A new neighborhood is built around and the Maguelone street that connects the station to the new Place de la Comedie. This square will symbolize, by itself, all the transformations accomplished under the Restoration, the Second Empire and the Third Republic.
These great achievements will open up the old city center. They are inspired by the works conducted in Paris by Baltard, Haussmann and Violet-le-Duc. Montpellier thus takes, little by little, the physiognomy that it will preserve until the years 1960/70.
At the end of the 19th century, the expansion of Montpellier experienced a sudden halt with the ravages of phylloxera on the vineyard followed by a dramatic crisis of overproduction wine.
The city enters the twentieth century in a situation of profound malaise. A slump that will culminate in 1907, with the event in its streets of more than 500 000 winemakers.
